Story

Synopsis

Hachiman Hikigaya has concluded that youth is a lie people tell themselves, and he has structured his entire social approach around expecting nothing from anyone. Sentenced to the Service Club as punishment for an essay expressing exactly that, he works alongside Yukino Yukinoshita, whose bluntness matches his cynicism, and Yui Yuigahama, whose relentless friendliness neither of them knows how to handle. Solving other students' problems repeatedly requires Hachiman to make himself the villain, which he does willingly and at increasing personal cost. Every solution he engineers costs him reputation he pretends not to care about.

Adapted from Wataru Watari's light novels by Brain's Base, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU built its reputation on genuinely uncomfortable emotional honesty rather than the escapism typical of school romantic comedy. Its protagonist's defensive cynicism resonated strongly enough with readers to make the franchise a fixture in discussions of well-written light novel adaptations. The series continued across multiple seasons under different studios and is widely regarded as one of the smartest entries the genre has produced. Its willingness to make its protagonist genuinely unpleasant set it apart immediately.

One reader said they would have gone five stars on Second Season. I'm finally willing to do so on THIS season- again, very much despite the fact that my candidate didn't "win". I guess the person not chosen can console herself with the knowledge that being Hachiman's love interest would have some definite downsides in the long run.

I almost went for five stars this time. The things that killed the deal were a bit too much abruptness in a critical place, and the fact that very often there was a lot of verbiage but I couldn't really tell exactly what all the words were driving at.
