Spoiler heads-up: this post touches manga events up to the Elbaph arc. If you’re anime-only, tread carefully.
Ok, picture this. A little kid is about to become a Sea King’s lunch. A red-haired pirate glances at the monster, and the monster… just leaves. No sword. No punch. No Devil Fruit. Only a look.

Here’s the short version for the impatient: Conqueror’s Haki (Haoshoku Haki, literally the “Color of the Supreme King”) is the rarest of the three types of Haki in One Piece. It lets the user push their willpower onto other people, knocking out the weak-willed and rattling even the strong. At the advanced level, the user can coat their body or weapon with that willpower and hit like a truck. Only about one person in several million is born with it.
Now the long version, because you didn’t come here for a paragraph.
First, what is Haki in One Piece?
Haki is a power that sleeps inside every living thing in the One Piece world. Think of it as willpower with a physical side. Most people never wake it up, and plenty never realise it’s there. Rayleigh explained it to Luffy during the two-year training, and the rule he kept repeating was simple: don’t hesitate, because Haki follows spirit.
There are three “colors”:
- Observation Haki (Kenbunshoku) lets you sense presences and emotions, and at higher levels catch a glimpse of what’s about to happen a few seconds from now.
- Armament Haki (Busoshoku) wraps you or your weapon in an invisible armour. It’s also the trick that lets you land hits on Logia users, whose bodies would otherwise let attacks pass right through. In Wano it goes by the name Ryuo, “Flowing Cherry Blossom”.
- Conqueror’s Haki (Haoshoku) is the main character of this article.
Observation and Armament can be learned. Give anybody enough training and a few near-death fights and they can get there. Conqueror’s is the odd one out. You either have the seed or you don’t. Think of the first two as gym memberships and the third as a lottery ticket, with much better odds than any real lottery, mind you.

The Japanese name is 覇王色 (Haoshoku), and the manga translates it as the Color of the Supreme King. The idea is that someone with this Haki carries the qualities of a ruler, the kind of person other people instinctively step back from.
What does that look like in practice?
- People with a weaker will black out on the spot. Luffy did this to a crowd on Sabaody without even knowing what he’d done.
- Animals and sea creatures get scared off, or even brought to heel. Shanks sending that Sea King packing is the textbook example.
- Two strong users clashing can split the sky and throw off black lightning. The Roger versus Whitebeard moment in Oden‘s flashback is the one to rewatch.
- Someone with a strong enough will can shrug it off. Being hit by it and staying on your feet tells you something about the person standing there.
One more thing. Because it’s tied to who you are, you can’t train your way into owning it. What training changes is control. A user who knows they have it can learn to aim it instead of leaking it everywhere. Imagine owning a fire hose with no nozzle. That’s Luffy before he learned to direct it.
All types of Conqueror’s Haki explained

A small honest note before we start: Oda hasn’t printed a neat chart with every sub-type labelled. What follows is how the story has actually shown Conqueror’s Haki working, grouped so it’s easier to follow. Two of these have official names. The other two are fan groupings of things the manga showed us.
1. Basic Conqueror’s Haki
This is the “look at the monster and it leaves” version. The user releases their willpower outward, either as a sudden burst or as a steady pressure. Anyone with a weaker will gets knocked out, and the rest feel it like a weight on their chest. Shanks in chapter 1, Luffy on Sabaody, Hancock, Rayleigh, Whitebeard and Big Mom all use it this way.
2. Advanced Conqueror’s Haki (infusion)
This is the big one. Instead of releasing the Haki around them, the user coats their body or weapon with it, the same way Armament Haki works. Kaido‘s Thunder Bagua and Ragnaraku rely on it, and that’s why his hits flatten people who’d survive almost anything else.
Chapter 1010, titled “Color of the Supreme King”, is where it all clicked. Zoro‘s swing wounded Kaido, and Luffy, lying on the ground, worked out that Kaido’s club was carrying Conqueror’s Haki. The technique that looked like Ryuo wasn’t only Armament. Luffy tried it himself and landed blows on Kaido without even making contact. Later, his Bajrang Gun was coated with it, strong enough to shake the skies.
Kaido himself pointed out that only the strongest can pull off infusion, which tells you how far Luffy had climbed by then. In the same chapter, Kaido suspected Zoro had it too, and Scopper Gaban later confirmed Zoro is a Conqueror’s Haki user.
3. Stored Conqueror’s Haki (Joy Boy’s knot)
This one is the strangest, and it came from Egghead. The Iron Giant, Emet, had Joy Boy‘s Conqueror’s Haki sealed inside a knot. When it was released, it knocked out the Five Elders and made Imu tremble. In other words, Haki that outlived the person who made it by roughly eight centuries. I know. Please take a moment.
It’s an official demonstration that Conqueror’s Haki can be stored in an object and released later, which nobody had seen before.
4. Conqueror’s Haki through a borrowed body (Imu)
The newest wrinkle. Imu has been shown channelling Conqueror’s Haki through a body they’ve possessed. Whoever the host is, Imu’s will goes out through them. That makes it one of the scariest uses of this ability so far, simply because you can’t shut it down by beating the person in front of you.
Conqueror’s Haki vs the other two types
| Type | Japanese name | What it does | Can you learn it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Observation Haki | Kenbunshoku | Senses presences, emotions and near-future moves | Yes, with training |
| Armament Haki | Busoshoku | Invisible armour, hits Logia users, advanced form flows into targets | Yes, with training |
| Conqueror’s Haki | Haoshoku | Overpowers other people’s will, advanced form coats body and weapons | Only if you’re born with it |
Who can use Conqueror’s Haki?
Here are the confirmed users worth knowing about:
- Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King, and the yardstick every other Haki feat gets measured against.
- Silvers Rayleigh, the Dark King, who taught Luffy the basics.
- Shanks, the first user we ever saw. A Beebom ranking cites an Oda interview saying his Conqueror’s Haki is twice as powerful as Luffy’s.
- Whitebeard, whose clash with Roger became the template for every “sky cracks open” scene afterwards.
- Kaido, Big Mom, Doflamingo, Ace, Boa Hancock and Oden.
- Don Chinjao and Eustass Kid, who show up proving the New World is full of people with kingly will.
- Yamato, who can coat a club in it, just like their father.
- Garp, Luffy’s grandfather and the Marine hero, so yes, Luffy follows the bloodline.
- Luffy and Zoro on the Straw Hat side.
- Imu, and Joy Boy through Emet’s knot.
Fans have been nominating Sanji, Nami and even Franky as the next Straw Hat to awaken it, mostly off the back of small panels and hints. Nothing is settled, so treat these as theories for now. Though honestly, a Franky awakening would be hilarious.

This is where fandom fights break out, so here’s what the manga actually backs up.
Joy Boy sits at the top. In chapter 1123, Dorry and Brogy say his Haki goes beyond Shanks’, and Emet’s knot knocking out the Five Elders supports it. Among characters we’ve seen in action, Shanks is widely treated as the strongest living user, and Roger remains the golden standard from the past. Imu’s use of it through other people is the one thing that might rival what we’ve seen from Joy Boy. Xebec, the newest heavy hitter, also made the strongest-users conversation after his clash in the Elbaph arc.
Where does Luffy fit? Honestly, still climbing. Since Gear 5 and the infusion breakthrough, the gap between him and the people above him has been closing.
Where does the word “Haki” come from?
It’s a normal Japanese word. 覇気 (はき, haki) means spirit, drive and vigour, and also ambition or aspiration. The first kanji, 覇, carries ideas like hegemony, supremacy and champion. The second, 気, is the very versatile “spirit, mind, air, mood” character. Put together, you get the feeling of someone who carries themselves like a winner.
In everyday Japanese, you’d say someone lacks haki when they seem flat and listless, the way you’d say “where’s your usual fire today?” Oda took an ordinary word for fighting spirit and turned it into a power system. Smart, honestly.

What does Haki mean?
It depends on where you hear it. In One Piece, Haki is a form of spiritual willpower that lives in every living being. In Japanese, 覇気 means spirit, drive or ambition. In Maori, “haki” is a loan word for something else entirely (more on that below).
What is haki called in Japanese?
It’s written 覇気 and read as “haki” (はき). One Piece names its three types with “color of” phrases: Kenbunshoku no Haki for Observation, Busoshoku no Haki for Armament and Haoshoku no Haki for Conqueror’s.
What does the Japanese word “Haki” mean?
Spirit, drive and vigour, plus ambition and aspiration. It describes a bold, domineering energy, the kind a person gives off when they intend to win.
What is haki in Japanese?
As a regular word, it’s a common noun you’d use for someone’s energy and fighting spirit. Someone with plenty of it seems confident and ready to push forward. Someone without it seems tired and checked out. The One Piece version takes that idea and makes it literal.
What does “Haki” mean in Maori?
In te reo Maori, “haki” is a loan word. The Te Aka Maori Dictionary lists it as meaning flag or ensign, and as meaning hockey, and there’s an older meaning of cheque. It’s also the name of a native shrub, the mountain holly. It has no connection to One Piece. If you’re thinking of the famous Maori war chant, that’s spelled “haka”, and it means dance.
What is haki in onepiece?
It’s the series’ main non-Devil-Fruit power system. Everyone has it dormant, and it takes the shape of three types: Observation, Armament and Conqueror’s. Rayleigh gave Luffy the first full explanation in chapter 597, and every Haki fight since has built on it.
What are all three types of haki?
Observation Haki (Kenbunshoku), which reads presences and near-future moves. Armament Haki (Busoshoku), which acts as invisible armour and lets you hit Logia users. Conqueror’s Haki (Haoshoku), which overpowers the will of others and, at the advanced level, can be infused into your body and weapons.
What is the strongest haki?
Joy Boy’s Conqueror’s Haki, based on chapter 1123 and what Emet’s knot did to the Five Elders. Among those we’ve seen fight, Shanks and Roger are the usual picks, and Luffy is closing in on them.
How does haki work in popular anime series?
Haki is specific to One Piece, where it works as willpower made physical: you sense, harden or project your spirit. Other series have their own versions of the idea. Dragon Ball has ki, Naruto has chakra, Hunter x Hunter has Nen and Bleach has spiritual pressure, and that last one is probably the closest cousin to Conqueror’s Haki.

So that’s Conqueror’s Haki. It’s the rarest piece of the three-part Haki system, you can’t train your way into it, and it’s the reason Oda’s strongest characters feel like they carry weather around with them. Basic Conqueror’s Haki knocks people out, the advanced version lets you hit with pure will, and Joy Boy’s stored knot showed us the ability can outlive the person who made it.
Now you know why Luffy’s fights look the way they do, and why Shanks can end a fight by staring at it. And with the final saga still unfolding, there’s every chance Oda adds another type before the story ends. I’ll be here, refreshing the chapter page with everyone else.
