Mobile Suit Gundam Watch Order: The Complete Universal Century Timeline, in order
“The original 1979 series through Char's Counterattack and beyond, with the ZZ Gundam and Soldiers of Sorrow entries most catalogs miss.”
This page follows the core Universal Century Gundam timeline, the original continuity everything else in the franchise eventually branches from.
It starts with the 1979 TV series, followed by three theatrical compilation films that condense that same story with new footage. Soldiers of Sorrow is the middle one, and it's easy to miss since it rarely gets listed next to the other two.
Zeta Gundam picks the story up seven years later, and ZZ Gundam continues directly from it. This is the entry that's most often missing from watch orders, probably because it's catalogued under its Japanese title rather than an English one. Skip it and Char's Counterattack loses a chunk of its setup. All three are essential.
The SD Gundam specials from the late '80s are a super-deformed parody spinoff, toy-commercial comedy rather than canon, so they're tagged skippable. Mobile Fighter G Gundam sits in the list too, but it's worth knowing it takes place in a completely different universe (Future Century, not Universal Century). It's here as a bonus rather than a continuation of anything above it.
From the 2000s onward it's mostly side material: Gundam Evolve is a set of short non-canon vignettes, the Zeta Gundam New Translation trilogy is a theatrical retelling of Zeta with a changed ending, and Gundam-san is a 4-koma comedy spinoff, none of them required.
The Origin OVA is the one exception in that stretch, a proper prequel filling in the backstory before the 1979 series, essential if you want the full picture. Its compilation movie retells the same ground and is optional. The G40 short and ALC Encounter special that close out the page are brief promotional pieces, not story.
The One Year War (1979–1982)
The route
Soldiers of Sorrow, the second compilation film.
The middle film of the original trilogy's three compilation movies, bridging the story Movie 1 and Movie 3 retell.
Encounters in Space, the final compilation film.
Zeta Gundam and the AEUG-Titans War (1985–1988)
The route
Continues directly from Zeta Gundam into the Neo Zeon conflict.
Catalogued under its Japanese title (Kidou Senshi Gundam ZZ), which is likely why it gets left off most watch orders elsewhere. It carries the Neo Zeon conflict forward from Zeta Gundam into the setup Char's Counterattack resolves.
Char's Counterattack, the story's climactic finale.
SD Gundam Side Stories (1988–1990)
A super-deformed parody spinoff, toy-commercial comedy rather than canon.
The route
A Different Universe: Mobile Fighter G Gundam (1994)
Set in the Future Century, a completely separate continuity from everything above it.
Included here as a bonus, not a story continuation. Shares no characters or timeline with the Universal Century material.
Side Material and Retellings (2001–2019)
The route
