Story

Synopsis

Arsene Lupin III inherits the extraordinary criminal ingenuity of his fabled French grandfather, roaming the international underworld in pursuit of priceless treasures. Operating from secret hideouts, Lupin teams up with cynical revolver expert Daisuke Jigen and traditional swordmaster Goemon Ishikawa XIII, while frequently falling for the seductive schemes of double-crossing thief Fujiko Mine. Each daring caper draws the immediate attention of Interpol Inspector Koichi Zenigata, whose single-minded determination leads to explosive vehicular chases and complex tactical standoffs. Despite constant danger, Lupin relies on quick wits and eccentric disguises to outplay corrupt syndicates.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers

Debuting on Yomiuri TV in October 1971, *Lupin III* was the first television adaptation of Monkey Punch manga, produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha. Initially directed by Masaaki Osumi with a dark, hard-boiled adult tone, direction was later assumed by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, who introduced energetic slapstick and human warmth. Featuring Yasuo Yamada as Lupin, Kiyoshi Kobayashi as Jigen, and Takeo Yamashita memorable jazz-funk musical score, this pioneering twenty-three episode series established the celebrated green jacket era, fundamentally altering the trajectory of Japanese television animation for mature audiences.

THEM Anime Reviews

Raphael See 1977

Now, _this_ is what Lupin III should be like, unlike the horrid Legend of the Gold of Babylon . The Tales of the Wolf series is done by Miyazaki Hayao ( My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind ), considered by most anime fans to be the J.R.R. Tolkien of anime. Nothing this man does seems to ever go wrong.
