Biography
Atsuko Nakajima was born on December 21, 1961, in Kanagawa Prefecture [1]. After trade school, she began working as a freelance animator and became a key contributor at Studio Deen [2]. She made her debut as animation director on Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura, later working in the same capacity on Maison Ikkoku, before moving into character design with Ranma 1/2, her first major design credit [2]. Over four decades she has built one of the longest character-design resumes in television anime, with credits spanning Fruits Basket, GetBackers, Rurouni Kenshin, Tokyo Ghoul:re, and Komi Can't Communicate [1]. She has said she deliberately took on a wide range of projects early in her career, explaining, "I tried to accept most jobs offered to me. Working on diverse projects develops flexibility" [2]. Her longest-running project is the Hakuouki franchise, where she has described growing personally invested in its characters over the years [2]. She is married to director and animator Tomohiro Hirata, with whom she worked on Trinity Blood [1].
