Once every fifty years, the mythical island of Houraijima materializes from mist, protected by an ancient barrier. Half-demon InuYasha, Kagome Higurashi, Miroku, Sango, and Shippo encounter a runaway half-demon child named Ai, who bears the four-scar mark of the Shitoushin, the Four War Gods who conquered the island and enslaved its half-demon children. Driven by memories of his past visit to the island fifty years earlier alongside Kikyo, InuYasha resolves to liberate the children. Alongside his half-brother Sesshomaru, who seeks vengeance for the defilement of his lands, InuYasha sails into Houraijima.

The Shitoushin harvest the half-demon children's life energy to fuel the Cauldron of Resonance to achieve absolute divine immortality. When Kikyo's clay clone is corrupted by the war gods' spiritual parasites, InuYasha purifies her spirit. Sesshomaru slays the lightning god Kyora, while Miroku and Sango destroy the beast gods Jura and Gora. In the volcanic crater, InuYasha and Kagome combine the Adamant Barrage and a sacred sacred arrow to obliterate the leader Ryura. The Cauldron is shattered, lifting the curse from the half-demon children, who sail safely to the mainland with InuYasha's party.
