Story

Synopsis

Raised in the secluded countryside of Thrace by his blind mother Demeter, gentle shepherd youth Arion lives unaware of his divine lineage. His peace shatters when his uncle Hades arrives from the Underworld, deceiving Arion into believing that slaying Zeus, king of Mount Olympus, is the sole way to cure his mother's blindness. Trained in the underworld as a deadly swordsman, Arion marches toward Olympus, accompanied by a giant companion, a cunning thief, and a mute maiden. As bloody armies clash across mythical battlegrounds, Arion uncovers the corrupt schemes of the gods, confronting his true heritage.

Directed by legendary animator Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and produced by Sunrise, *Arion* debuted in Japanese theaters in March 1986. Adapting Yasuhiko's own epic mythology manga serialized in *Monthly Comic Ryū*, the film was an extraordinary showcase of late-eighties golden-age hand-drawn animation craftsmanship. Celebrated for its sweeping battle choreography, intricate classical Greco-Roman architecture, and Joe Hisaishi's majestic symphonic score, the two-hour theatrical feature stands as an ambitious cinematic masterpiece of fantasy tragedy, deeply revered by animation historians for its expressive character animation and visceral martial artistry.
