Urusei Yatsura Watch Order: The Original, InuYasha, and the 2022 Reboot, in order
“Two complete Rumiko Takahashi classics on one page, from the 1981 alien comedy through the 2022 remake.”
This page actually covers two separate Rumiko Takahashi anime, not one continuous story, so it's worth explaining the layout before diving in.
Urusei Yatsura is the original: a slapstick alien-invasion comedy that ran 195 episodes from 1981 to 1986, wrapped up with a short TV special, and kept going through six theatrical movies into 1991. None of the six movies are optional, they're numbered continuations of the same cast and jokes, so they're all tagged essential. The 1986 OVA is a smaller stand-alone bonus and tagged optional.
InuYasha comes next on the page, but it's a different story entirely: a feudal-Japan demon adventure with a new cast, nothing to do with the alien sitcom above it. The main series ran 167 episodes from 2000 to 2004, its four movies came out as separate side-stories during that same window (skippable if you're only after the main plot, so they're tagged optional here), and the story picked back up in 2009 with The Final Act to adapt the ending the original TV run never got to. That one's essential, it's the actual conclusion.
Mixed into that stretch are a couple of small 2008 specials made for Shonen Sunday's anniversary, plus an old '90s promo CM. None of them move the plot, so they're tagged skippable.
The 2022 Urusei Yatsura closes out the page. It's a full remake of the 1981 original, redone from scratch with new animation, timed to the manga's 40th anniversary, and its second season carries the story further than the original series ever adapted. Both seasons are essential if you want the modern version; a short sneaker-brand crossover ad sits between them and is pure skippable filler.
