Synopsis

Makoto Konno discovers she can leap backward through time and does exactly what any seventeen-year-old would: uses it to retake tests, avoid embarrassment, and endlessly extend an afternoon of karaoke with her two closest friends. Then the consequences start arriving, because rewinding her own inconveniences means shifting them onto other people. When one of those friends confesses feelings she is not ready to handle, her instinct to undo the moment turns out to have costs she cannot rewind away, and the leaps themselves are finite.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by Mamoru Hosoda and loosely adapting Yasutaka Tsutsui's novel as a sequel rather than a straight retelling, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was Hosoda's breakthrough film following his departure from a troubled Howl's Moving Castle production. It won major domestic animation awards and established him as a significant directorial voice outside Studio Ghibli. The film is frequently recommended as an ideal introduction to non-Ghibli anime cinema, praised for grounding its science fiction premise entirely in ordinary adolescent emotion. Its treatment of time travel as an ordinary teenage temptation remains its greatest strength.
