Synopsis

Ranma Saotome is a prodigiously skilled teenage martial artist who trained at the cursed springs of Jusenkyo in China alongside his father, Genma. Falling into the Spring of Drowned Girl, Ranma is cursed to transform into a red-haired girl whenever splashed with cold water, reverting to a boy only with hot water. Arriving in Nerima, Tokyo, Ranma discovers an arranged marriage has been arranged for him with Akane Tendo, a fiercely proud martial arts practitioner who dislikes boys. Surrounded by eccentric suitors, bitter martial rivals, and wacky transformations, Ranma and Akane navigate hilarious domestic friction and explosive martial arts brawls.

Background (may contain spoilers)

Produced by Studio Deen under the direction of Tomomi Mochizuki, Tsutomu Shibayama, and Junji Nishimura, *Ranma ½* adapts the globally famous comedy manga created by Rumiko Takahashi. Debuting on Fuji TV in 1989 and expanding through Ranma 1/2 Nettou-hen across 161 total episodes, the series became a cornerstone of the 1990s anime boom in the West. Featuring dynamic martial arts fight choreography, colorful character slapstick, and iconic voice acting by Kappei Yamaguchi and Megumi Hayashibara, the production influenced generations of romantic comedies and gender-bending tropes across modern global pop culture.
