Synopsis

In the mystical fantasy land of Shangri-La, humans and demons once lived in peaceful harmony until an anomaly of negative spiritual energy causes demons across the continent to violently lose their sanity. To prevent the forbidden resurrection of the ancient ox-demon king Gyumaoh, the divine Merciful Goddess commands rogue, gun-toting Buddhist monk Genjyo Sanzo to travel westward into India. Accompanied by three humanoid demons immune to the spiritual madness: monkey king Son Goku, charming water demon Sha Gojyo, and gentle dragon handler Cho Hakkai, the unorthodox quadruplet embarks in a red jeep, engaging in gunfights against demonic assassins.

Background (may contain spoilers)

Produced by Studio Pierrot and directed by Hayato Date, *Saiyuki* is a 2000 television anime adaptation of Kazuya Minekura's bestselling manga Gensoumaden Saiyuuki. Spanning fifty episodes on TV Tokyo, the series achieved enormous popularity for radically transforming the classic 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West into a stylish, rock-and-roll supernatural action western. Featuring charismatic bishounen character designs, cynical dialogue, and energetic gunfight choreography, the production spawned multiple sequels, theatrical films, and an enduring franchise following.
