Story

Synopsis

Awakened from three hundred million years of fossilized slumber, an elite vanguard of five cybernetically enhanced Paleozoic creatures known as Genesect discovers that their ancient prehistoric habitat has disappeared. Led by an aggressive Shiny Genesect commander, the displaced creatures invade bustling New Tork City, mistaking modern skyscrapers for their ancestral mountain pillars and threatening human residents. When the ferocious invaders attack innocent inhabitants, the legendary guardian Mewtwo intervenes to prevent catastrophic destruction. As city streets become an explosive battleground of hypersonic energy attacks, Satoshi and Pikachu race to bridge understanding between past and present.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Studio OLM produced this high-energy seventy-one-minute animated feature film, released by TOHO in Japanese theaters in July 2013 as the climactic sixteenth theatrical film in the franchise. Directed by Kunihiko Yuyama and written by Hideki Sonoda, the movie served as the final cinematic installment of the *Best Wishes!* era. Renowned voice actress Reiko Takashima voiced the compassionate Mewtwo, who demonstrated the newly introduced Mega Evolution transformation ahead of the *Pokemon X and Y* video games. The film enjoyed massive commercial box office success, accompanied by a popular theme song performed by rock band Ikimonogakari.
