Story
Synopsis
While traveling through the tropical Orange Archipelago, Ash Ketchum, Misty, and Tracey are blown off course by a freak tempest onto Shamouti Island. Welcomed during a local ceremony, Ash is designated the honorary Chosen One tasked with retrieving three sacred glass orbs from Fire, Ice, and Lightning Islands. Meanwhile, ruthless collector Lawrence III deploys an enormous airborne dreadnought to capture the legendary birds Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno to summon Lugia, the mythical Beast of the Sea. Lawrence's reckless greed disrupts the planetary ocean currents, sparking catastrophic worldwide weather disasters.

Lawrence captures Moltres and Zapdos, destabilizing the global climate. As the legendary birds escape and engage in a ferocious free-for-all over Shamouti Island, Lugia rises from the sea depths to protect the world, carrying Ash and Pikachu into the sky. Ash braves freezing storms to collect the third crystal orb, but Lugia is shot down by Lawrence's energy nets. With Misty and Tracey's assistance, Ash places all three orbs into the island shrine, allowing maiden Melody to play Lugia's sacred song on her ocarina. The harmonious melody pacifies the birds, averting planetary apocalypse.
