Synopsis

While journeying through the Kalos region, trainer Satoshi and Pikachu are caught in a tremendous shockwave when the mythical steam-powered creature Volcanion plummets from the heavens. A magnetic technological chain binds Satoshi to Volcanion, forcing the reluctant human to accompany the beast on a perilous rescue mission. Volcanion harbors a deep distrust of humans, yet needs aid to reach the steampunk metropolis of the Azoth Kingdom. A corrupt royal counselor named Alva has kidnapped Magearna, an ancient artificial mechanical soul created five centuries ago, plotting to weaponize its mystical Soul-Heart to conquer the kingdom.

Background (may contain spoilers)

Studio OLM produced this ninety-four-minute animated fantasy action feature, released across Japanese theaters by TOHO in July 2016. Directed by franchise veteran Kunihiko Yuyama and written by Atsuhiro Tomioka, the film marked the nineteenth theatrical movie in the franchise and served as the cinematic finale of the *XY&Z* television series. Popular actor Somegoro Ichikawa provided the gruff voice of Volcanion, while pop artist YUKI performed the vibrant theme song. The movie was praised by audiences for its elaborate steampunk worldbuilding, exciting aerial airship clashes, and heartwarming message about protecting rare Pokémon.
