Synopsis

High school student Chiyo Sakura builds up the courage to confess her romantic feelings to her tall, stoic classmate Umetaro Nozaki. Through a hilarious misunderstanding, Nozaki assumes she is an ardent fan and gives her his autograph, inviting her to his apartment where she ends up filling in ink backgrounds for his shojo manga. Nozaki is secretly a celebrated, serialized shojo manga artist publishing under a female pen name, completely oblivious to real-world romantic cues. Sakura becomes his regular manga assistant, joining an eccentric circle of classmates whose bizarre personalities inadvertently inspire Nozaki's melodramatic fictional comic storylines.

Background (may contain spoilers)

Produced by Doga Kobo and directed by Mitsue Yamazaki, *Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun* adapts the four-panel romantic comedy web manga created by Izumi Tsubaki. Premiering in July 2014, the 12-episode television series earned unanimous critical acclaim for its subversive parody of classic shojo manga tropes, impeccable comedic timing, and charming ensemble cast. Junichiro Taniguchi provided expressive character designs that captured Tsubaki's distinct visual humor. The anime became a breakout commercial and critical success, winning multiple comedy accolades and solidifying Doga Kobo's reputation as a premier comedy and slice-of-life studio.

“Nozaki-kun is adapted from a 4Koma manga and is easily on par with some of the most famous 4Koma adaptations, like Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star.”
