Synopsis

Five years ago, a devastating plague ravaged Ootsuka Village, leaving the entire community incinerated to contain the infection. Only three youths survived the tragedy: Shino Inuzuka, his foster brother Sosuke Inukawa, and their adoptive sister Hamaji. Living quietly under the protection of a rural church, the survivors harbor dangerous supernatural secrets. Shino holds the demonic living sword Murasame sealed within his right arm, preventing his physical body from aging past thirteen, while Sosuke shares his soul with a loyal dog named Yoshiro. When Hamaji is kidnapped by the Imperial Church to force Shino's cooperation, Shino embarks on a perilous journey across the imperial capital, seeking the eight destined bearers of sacred spiritual beads.

Hakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East (Hakkenden: Touhou Hakken Ibun) is based on the supernatural fantasy manga by Miyuki Abe, loosely inspired by the classic 19th-century Japanese epic Nansou Satomi Hakkenden. Produced by Studio Deen with direction by Mitsue Yamazaki and chief direction by Osamu Yamasaki, the first season premiered in January 2013 on MBS. Featuring lush character designs, folklore intrigue, and emotional gothic storytelling, the anime was well received by female and fantasy demographics, leading to a second season in Summer 2013.
