Synopsis

Ten years ago, an anomalous spatial distortion known as Hell's Gate appeared in Tokyo, obscuring the natural night sky with counterfeit stars and granting select individuals supernatural abilities. These individuals, known as Contractors, possess lethal powers but lack human emotional empathy, forced to pay a compulsory psychological price or ritualistic remuneration each time their abilities are activated. Hei, a formidable operative codenamed the Black Reaper, undertakes covert espionage missions for the enigmatic Syndicate. Guided by his handler and an emotionless doll named Yin, Hei navigates dangerous underworld conflicts while investigating the truth behind the Gates.

Background (may contain spoilers)

Produced by studio Bones and created and directed by Tensai Okamura, *Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha* premiered on MBS and TBS in April 2007, running for 25 episodes. Featuring stylish character designs by Takahiro Komori and a jazz-infused, eclectic musical score by Yoko Kanno, the original television series earned substantial praise for its atmospheric neo-noir aesthetic and tightly choreographed urban combat. The production seamlessly fused cold-war espionage thriller pacing with gritty superhero mechanics, establishing a cult following and giving rise to subsequent manga adaptations, sequels, and home-video OVA releases.
