Story

Synopsis

On the fantastical planet Arcana, Palme is a sentient wooden automaton carved from the mystical Kooloop tree, created to care for an ailing woman who eventually passed away. Devoid of emotion and mourning quietly, Palme life shifts when a wounded underground warrior named Koram entrusts him with the mystical Egg of the Roof. Embarking on a perilous odyssey across surreal desert landscapes toward the subterranean realm of Tamas, Palme travels alongside an eccentric band of vagabonds. Facing treacherous pursuers, Palme discovers sorrow, compassion, and the painful beauty of human consciousness.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed and written by Takashi Nakamura, the acclaimed animation director of *Akira*, this 2002 auteur fantasy film was produced by Palm Studio. Reimagining the classic Pinocchio fable within a surreal, moebius-inspired science fantasy ecosystem, the production took three years of meticulous hand-drawn animation to complete. Screened at the Berlin International Film Festival, the film garnered international acclaim among animation scholars for its dense mythic lore, evocative character designs, and hauntingly philosophical visual poetry.
