Story

Synopsis

In ancient mythological antiquity, the divine siblings Oceanus, God of the Seas, and Hyperia, Goddess of Fire, lived in harmonious love until the jealous wind god Algaroc sowed bitter lies, sparking a catastrophic divine war. Ever since that ancient betrayal, the kingdoms of Water and Fire have remained segregated in eternal hatred. Centuries later, Prince Syrius of the aquatic realm ventures near the ocean surface, falling in love with Princess Malta, guardian of the sacred holy flame. Defying strict parental taboos, the star-crossed elemental lovers seek the legendary singing hill where water and fire may coexist forever.

Sanrio produced this visually magnificent 107-minute animated fantasy romance feature, released in Japanese theaters in July 1981. Directed by Masami Hata and conceived by Sanrio founder Shintaro Tsuji, the production was inspired by William Shakespeare's *Romeo and Juliet* and classical Greek mythology. Featuring sweeping orchestral compositions performed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and character designs by Takashi Yanase, the film achieved international acclaim. The production is widely remembered for its fluid hand-drawn water physics, lush color styling, and poignant exploration of sacrificial love triumphing over ancestral prejudice.
