Synopsis

Spanning three major modern Chinese metropolises, this poignant anthology film weaves three interconnected tales exploring the bittersweet passage of time through sensory memories of food, clothing, and shelter. In Beijing, a lonely young professional remembers his loving grandmother through the nostalgic taste of traditional San Xian rice noodles. In Guangzhou, a struggling fashion model and her supportive younger sister confront the harsh realities of beauty and career decline. In Shanghai, a man uncovers an unplayed cassette tape containing a forgotten childhood romance. Together, these intimate stories reflect upon human connection, regional heritage, and urban change.

Background (may contain spoilers)

Co-produced by Japan's CoMix Wave Films and China's Haoliners Animation League, *Shikioriori* debuted in cinemas and on Netflix in August 2018 under the English title Flavors of Youth. Directed by Li Haoling, Jiaoshou Yi Xiaoxing, and Yoshitaka Takeuchi, the project utilized CoMix Wave's signature photorealistic background art, painterly lighting, and emotional musical scoring to depict contemporary Chinese cityscapes. The collaboration marked an important cultural bridge between the Japanese and Chinese animation industries, receiving warm appreciation for its authentic cultural details, nostalgic coming-of-age storytelling, and evocative celebration of modern Chinese urban life.

“I'd only rate "A Little Fashion Show" as better than average, but overall it's a credible attempt by Haoliners to do a somewhat more "realistic" drama. It's an "E for effort" type of show.”
