Synopsis

Based on the real childhood experiences of author Kayoko Ebina, this poignant historical drama follows Kayoko, a cheerful, crybaby first-grader growing up in Tokyo's working-class Honjo district during the height of World War II in 1945. Despite strict food rationing, air raid sirens, and the military draft claiming her older brothers, Kayoko's family maintains warmth, humor, and tender musical traditions in their modest home. As American bombing raids intensify over Tokyo, Kayoko's parents make the agonizing decision to evacuate her to a distant countryside temple in Numazu for safety.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Kayoko endures severe homesickness, harsh living conditions, and emotional isolation in the rural temple, comforting herself by singing family folk songs. On the night of March 10, 1945, the Great Tokyo Air Raid incinerates Honjo in an immense firestorm. Weeks later, an uncle arrives at the temple to deliver catastrophic news: Kayoko's mother, father, grandmother, and two younger brothers were all burned alive in the firebombing. Left completely alone as an orphan, Kayoko weeps bitterly on the riverbank, before resolving to carry the warm memories of her beloved family into the post-war future.
