Synopsis

Produced by Telecom Animation Film for the 2011 Young Animator Training Project, this poignant historical short follows elderly grandfather Minosuke as he reprimands his young grandson for playing carelessly with an antique oil lamp in the family shed. Softening his tone, Minosuke sits the boy down to recount the story of his youth during the Meiji modernization era. Working as an impoverished orphan laborer, young Minosuke was mesmerized when he first saw a Western kerosene lamp shining brightly in a neighboring town, resolving to build a thriving business selling modern lamps to rural villages.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Minosuke builds a prosperous enterprise, marrying his childhood sweetheart and illuminating his village with dozens of beloved oil lamps. However, the relentless march of technological progress arrives as municipal electricity poles and incandescent lightbulbs spread across Japan, rendering Minosuke's lamps completely obsolete. In an initial fit of bitter despair, Minosuke gathers all sixty-eight of his unsold lamps by a lakeside to incinerate them, but stops, realizing that progress improves human lives. Peaceful and wise, Minosuke teaches his grandson to welcome technological change without forgetting the past.
