Story

Synopsis

During a tranquil summer break in rural Nagano, high school sophomore Kaito Kirishima test-runs his grandfather vintage 8mm video camera near a scenic bridge, only to be caught in the explosive shockwave of a spacecraft crash. Waking in his bed with no injuries, Kaito meets Ichika Takatsuki, a red-haired transfer student who moves into his home. In reality, Ichika is an alien stranded on Earth. To spend time together, Kaito and his friends decide to shoot an amateur science fiction movie, sparking unrequited romantic feelings, teenage jealousy, and tender self-discovery.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers

Airing twelve episodes from January to March 2012, *Waiting in the Summer* was produced by J.C.Staff and directed by Tatsuyuki Nagai, with series composition by Yousuke Kuroda and character designs by Taraku Uonuma. Serving as a spiritual successor to Kuroda classic *Please Teacher!*, the production was celebrated for its scenic watercolor depictions of Komoro, emotionally nuanced adolescent love polygon, and nostalgic summer ambiance. Scored by I've Sound, the anime stands as a poignant coming-of-age romantic drama.

You'll laugh and you'll cry as it toys with your emotions - this is a love story done right and its story-telling, characters and emotional payload will all drill into your soul. A must-own.

Some may call it too rosy-cheeked, too earnest to be real—but that's exactly the point, that it captures the optimism of high school romance.

Carlos/Giancarla Ross 2012

You've probably seen this before, and the result this time is a mixed bag of beautiful visuals and trite storytelling. If you obsess over anything Please! -related then this may merit another star, while folks who are done with teenage melodrama should pass on this and move to a different genre of romance.
