Story

Synopsis

To the outside world, high schoolers Hanabi Yasuraoka and Mugi Awaya appear to be the ideal romantic couple, envied by classmates for their mutual beauty and harmony. In truth, their relationship is a secret, melancholic facade; both harbor deeply unrequited desires for adult figures in their lives, Hanabi for childhood friend and teacher Narumi Kanai, and Mugi for music instructor Akane Minagawa. Bound by loneliness and yearning, Hanabi and Mugi use each other as emotional and physical surrogates to cope with heartache, spiraling into complicated entanglements that expose the raw, selfish nature of human desire.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Produced by studio Lerche and broadcast on Fuji TV's prestigious Noitamina programming block in winter 2017, *Scum's Wish* adapted Mengo Yokoyari's poignant romantic drama manga. Directed by Masaomi Ando with evocative scripts by Makoto Uezu, the series earned significant critical notice for its unflinching, candid portrayal of adolescent sexuality, unrequited longing, and psychological vulnerability. The anime distinctive visual presentation, featuring manga-panel split screens and Sayuri's memorable ending theme song, captured the bittersweet ache of youthful disillusionment.
