Story

Synopsis

Lacking career ambition after graduating from college, Rikuo Uozumi works part-time at a local Tokyo convenience store, feeling stagnant while peers progress into adulthood. His quiet routine changes when he meets Haru Nonaka, an eccentric dropout accompanied by a pet crow who frequently visits his counter. Soon after, his long-time university crush Shinako Morinome moves back to town to teach high school, still grieving her deceased childhood sweetheart. Intersecting with Shinako troubled younger student Rou Hayakawa, the four young adults navigate tender, messy misunderstandings while seeking emotional maturity in everyday Tokyo neighborhoods.

Based on Kei Toume's beloved coming-of-age manga serialized over eighteen years, *Sing 'Yesterday' for Me* was animated by studio Doga Kobo and broadcast in spring 2020. Directed by Yoshiyuki Fujiwara with series composition by Jin Tanaka, the twelve-episode television series won deep praise for its mature emotional restraint, realistic character interactions, and melancholic slice-of-life pacing. The production beautifully captures the quiet anxiety of early adulthood through subtle character animations, naturalistic vocal performances, and detailed suburban Tokyo urban settings.
