“Forget that it was based on a game only two generations removed from Pong; this is unexpectedly involving popcorn fare with a wickedly circular sense of humor. Good stuff all around.”

Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk
Druaga no Tou: The Aegis of Uruk · ドルアーガの塔 〜the Aegis of URUK〜 · 2008
A determined young shield-user scales an ancient monster tower for glory.
Synopsis
Eighty years after the mythical hero Gilgamesh defeated the demon god Druaga, the colossal monster-infested Tower of Druaga resurrects once again, protected by hordes of terrifying beasts. Every few years during the Summer of Anu, the demonic magic weakens, prompting the Kingdom of Uruk to deploy armies and adventurous climbers to reach the tower's summit, where the mythical Blue Crystal Rod awaits. Jil, an earnest and clumsy young guardian warrior wielding a heavy shield, is kicked out of his initial party for incompetence. Undeterred, Jil recruits an eclectic crew of misfits to brave the tower's treacherous labyrinths.
Background (may contain spoilers)
Produced by studio Gonzo and directed by Koichi Chigira, *Druaga no Tou: The Aegis of Uruk* debuted in April 2008 as a collaborative multimedia project with video game developer Namco Bandai, reviving the classic 1984 arcade franchise. Featuring series composition by celebrated light novel author Shoji Gatoh of Full Metal Panic fame, the 12-episode anime playfully parodied tabletop gaming cliches before developing into an engaging, high-stakes heroic fantasy quest. The production featured lush background art, comedic parody dream sequences, and spirited orchestral battle themes, earning a dedicated following among classic dungeon-crawling fantasy fans.

“It's a decent show, I guess. Maybe my expectations were too high or something, especially after that ludicrous-yet-hilarious first episode.”
