Synopsis

During the Dark Ages, the corrupt Divine Empire ruthlessly expands across the continent, subjugating outlying Celtic tribes through brutal force and dark sorcery. When a fanatical priest attempts to sacrifice tribal maiden Rhiannon to resurrect the ancient Demon King Arawn, Rhiannon's chieftain brother Arthur mounts a desperate rescue. However, upon reviving, Arawn reveals himself not as a malevolent monster, but as an enlightened, charismatic sovereign who aligns with the oppressed Gaels. Joining Arthur and Rhiannon as their tribal chieftain, Arawn leads a rebellion against the tyrannical empire to reclaim territorial freedom.

Background (may contain spoilers)

Based on the tactical role-playing game developed by Leaf and Aquaplus, *Tears to Tiara* was produced by studio White Fox under the direction of Tomoki Kobayashi in 2009. The twenty-six episode television adaptation was White Fox's inaugural television series, establishing the studio's early pedigree for epic fantasy worldbuilding. Combining Celtic mythology, Arthurian legend motifs, and tactical medieval warfare, the production earned praise for its rich lore, strategic battle sequences, and memorable musical score by Takayuki Hattori.

“This mix of Arthurian legend with elements of Celtic, Greek, and Christian mythology succeeds because it does not aspire to be anything other than what it is: a simple, sometimes rousing, and usually straightforward story designed to entertain fans of fantasy RPGs. This time around it even has a decent English dub.”
