Synopsis

Balsa is a formidable thirty-year-old nomadic female spear wielder who wanders the land seeking to save eight lives to atone for past deaths caused in her youth. While passing through the New Yogo Empire, she rescues Prince Chagum, the second prince, after he is pushed from a bridge. Chagum's mother secretly hires Balsa as the boy's personal bodyguard, revealing that his royal father has ordered his assassination because Chagum is possessed by an ancient water spirit deemed a demonic curse. Fleeing imperial hunters and monstrous subterranean predators, Balsa protects Chagum while uncovering the truth behind the spirit.

Background (may contain spoilers)

Produced by Production I.G and directed by Kenji Kamiyama, *Seirei no Moribito* is a 26-episode television anime adapting Nahoko Uehashi's celebrated fantasy novel. Airing on NHK BS2 in 2007, the series earned universal critical acclaim for its painterly background art, rich historical Asian worldbuilding, and grounded, fluid spear combat choreography. Kamiyama's thoughtful direction, paired with an evocative orchestral score by Kenji Kawai, elevated the production into a landmark of mature, poetic fantasy animation. The anime received international praise for its nuanced character development, maternal bond, and dignified portrayal of warrior ethics.
