“A bit heavy on the story and somewhat darker, it's still a memorable romp through the fields of good fun and a title worth keeping. You might subtract a star if you don't like comedy anime turning dark (and back) on you, but if you just want a good laugh with a solid plot, look no further than the large fireball explosions in the distance.”

Slayers
スレイヤーズ · 1995–2009
A temperamental sorceress and a brawny swordsman traverse chaotic high-fantasy realms.
Synopsis
Lina Inverse is a diminutive yet notoriously powerful teenage sorceress whose explosive appetite for food and gold is matched only by her terrifying destructive magical arsenal. After obliterating an arrogant bandit gang and plundering their magical treasures, Lina is rescued from remaining rogues by dimwitted but skilled swordsman Gourry Gabriev, who mistakenly assumes she is a helpless maiden. Deciding to travel together, the unlikely duo soon discovers that an unassuming artifact Lina stole holds the secret to resurrecting the ancient demonic Dark Lord Shabranigdu. Pursued by ruthless sorcerers and demonic monsters, Lina unleashes devastating spells to save the continent.
Background (may contain spoilers)
Adapted from the iconic fantasy light novel series written by Hajime Kanzaka and illustrated by Rui Araizumi, *Slayers* debuted as a twenty-six episode television anime in April 1995. Produced by animation studio E&G Films under the direction of Takashi Watanabe, the series revolutionized modern fantasy anime by blending epic high-magic adventure with irreverent comedic satire. Voiced with legendary vigor by Megumi Hayashibara, protagonist Lina Inverse became one of the most recognizable anime heroines of the 1990s, spawning multiple sequels, feature films, and original video animations.

No score yet · 2 reviews“Surprisingly enough, the storylines are quite good, and would probably fit right in with any other "serious" fantasy series. Rather than make the plot silly as all get out (a la Dragon Half), the writers decided to do a respectable job and simply overlay the comedy right on top of it.”

Read full review ↗“As with past installments in the franchise, this one offers lots of high-spirited, typically light-hearted fun populated densely with flashy displays of magic and wanton destruction. It even has an actual plot and the same English dub cast, too! Though hardly fresh, it can be entertaining.”
