“However, those who want fantasy duels would be better served by the Lodoss Wars OVA series, and those seeking bishounen will at least be entertained by the graphics in the new X television series. So go watch them instead.”

Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac
Saint Seiya · 聖闘士星矢(セイントセイヤ) · 1986
Bronze saints burn their cosmic cosmo to protect the goddess Athena.
Synopsis
Seiya is an orphaned youth sent to Greece to undergo brutal martial arts training, eventually earning the mythical Bronze Cloth of the Pegasus constellation. Returning to Japan, he enters the high-stakes Galaxian Wars tournament alongside fellow Bronze Saints Shiryu, Hyoga, and Shun to claim the Golden Cloth of Sagittarius and locate his missing sister. However, the tournament is interrupted by corrupt forces serving Sanctuary, prompting the young warriors to swear fealty to Saori Kido, the true modern reincarnation of the goddess Athena. Burning their inner cosmic energy known as Cosmo, the Saints wage legendary battles across the Twelve Zodiac Temples.
Background (may contain spoilers)
Produced by Toei Animation and directed by Kozo Morishita and Kazuhito Kikuchi, the original 1986 *Saint Seiya* television series adapted the legendary mythic shonen manga created by Masami Kurumada. Airing on TV Asahi from October 1986 to April 1989 across 114 episodes, the anime was a monumental commercial success that defined 1980s action animation across Japan, Europe, and Latin America. Shingo Araki and Michi Himeno provided elegant, iconic character and armor designs, while Seiji Yokoyama composed a sweeping, dramatic symphonic score. The franchise remains a beloved titan of international pop culture, inspiring multiple sequels, movies, and spin-offs.

“Saint Seiya couldn't look or sound more like 1986 even if they'd tried. Don't expect to be wowed... It's a shock ADV committed to releasing over one hundred episodes of this tripe.”
