Synopsis

Kei Kusanagi is a high school student suffering from an unusual chronic illness called the standstill, which causes him to fall into prolonged comas during periods of extreme emotional stress. While stargazing by a rural lake, Kei accidentally witnesses a glowing spaceship landing and encounters an extraterrestrial woman. The following morning, the beautiful alien introduces herself to his class as their new homeroom teacher, Mizuho Kazami. When a series of awkward misunderstandings traps the pair in an abandoned storage shed, they are forced to stage a secret shotgun marriage to protect Mizuho's secret mission and Kei's academic reputation.

Background (may contain spoilers)

Produced by studio Daume and directed by Yasunori Ide, *Onegai☆Teacher* premiered in January 2002, spanning 13 television episodes and defining the romantic comedy anime genre for the 2000s. Conceived by creative group Please! and scripted by Yousuke Kuroda, the series was celebrated for its delicate rural Lake Kizaki setting, nuanced emotional intimacy, and iconic techno-pop opening theme Shooting Star performed by KOTOKO. Taraku Uon's memorable character designs and the romantic chemistry between Kei and Mizuho made the production an instant classic, spawning subsequent sequels and popularizing the Lake Kizaki real-world anime pilgrimage.
