Aoi Bungaku is not perfect but pretty much every niggle vanishes before its visual flair, powerful stories and its thought provoking nature. Take two stars away if you hate your animé dark, thoughtful and heavy. Actually, you should probably stay away from this if that is the case.

No Longer Human: Director's Cut
Ningen Shikkaku: Director's Cut-ban · 2009
An alienated artist chronicles his tragic self-destruction.
Synopsis
Adapted from Osamu Dazai's autobiographical literary classic with character designs by Takeshi Obata, this theatrical director's cut compiles the opening arc of the Aoi Bungaku anime series. The psychological narrative chronicles the tragic life of Yozo Oba, a deeply alienated young man from a wealthy northern family who feels fundamentally disconnected from human society. To mask his crippling terror of human intimacy and societal hypocrisy, Yozo plays the role of a buffoonish clown, smiling outwardly while drowning his profound despair in alcoholism, casual sexual dalliances, and artistic nihilism.
