Synopsis

Adapted from Osamu Dazai's autobiographical literary classic with character designs by Takeshi Obata, this theatrical director's cut compiles the opening arc of the Aoi Bungaku anime series. The psychological narrative chronicles the tragic life of Yozo Oba, a deeply alienated young man from a wealthy northern family who feels fundamentally disconnected from human society. To mask his crippling terror of human intimacy and societal hypocrisy, Yozo plays the role of a buffoonish clown, smiling outwardly while drowning his profound despair in alcoholism, casual sexual dalliances, and artistic nihilism.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Yozo's life collapses into an agonizing spiral of addiction and guilt following a failed double suicide with a seaside bar hostess who drowns while he survives. Marrying an innocent young woman named Yoshiko, Yozo briefly hopes for salvation, but his psyche is shattered when she is sexually assaulted by an acquaintance due to her trusting nature. Turning to morphine addiction to numb his pain, Yozo is betrayed by his friends and committed to a mental asylum. Sitting alone as a hollow, prematurely aged invalid, Yozo declares himself disqualified from being a human being.
