Synopsis

In an alternate nineteenth-century Victorian steampunk world, the industrial revolution relies entirely on reanimated corpses, re-engineered through pseudo-scientific technology to serve as mute, emotionless laborers. However, reanimation cannot restore the human soul. Brilliant London medical student John Watson illegally reanimates his deceased companion Friday, desperate to prove that spiritual consciousness can be recovered. Scouted by the British secret intelligence service, Watson is dispatched on a covert global expedition across the Russian Empire and America to retrieve the legendary memorandum of Victor Frankenstein, uncovering a chilling geopolitical conspiracy seeking to weaponize reanimated humanity.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Wit Studio produced this visually breathtaking two-hour science-fiction historical feature film, released across Japanese theaters by TOHO in October 2015. Directed by Ryoutou Makihara, the movie was the first of three theatrical features adapting the literary works of celebrated author Project Itoh, completed posthumously by his close friend, novelist Toh EnJoe. Featuring lavish Victorian architecture, dynamic action choreography, and a haunting score by Yoshihiro Ike, the production received the Special Distinction Prize at the 2016 Fantasia International Film Festival for its philosophical ambition and dark, gorgeous steampunk aesthetic.
