Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space

Independent avant-garde artistic collective t.o.L written, directed, and scored this visionary cult feature film, released theatrically in October 2002. Combining monochromatic 2D character animation evocative of classic 1930s cartoons with striking 3D computer backgrounds, the project offered a sharp, cynical critique of rampant hyper-capitalism, consumerism, and totalitarian corporate branding. The film gained widespread international acclaim on the festival circuit, winning the Best Animated Film award at the 2003 Fantasia Film Festival. It spawned subsequent OVA installments and remains a landmark achievement in Japanese underground animation.
