Her courtroom victory prompts a desperate, psychopathic retaliation from Shell, culminating in an apocalyptic duel against Shell's heavily augmented terminator assassin, Dimsdale Boiled.

Boiled corners Balot and steals Oeufcoque, seeking to force the golden companion back into his own psychopathic hands. Drawing upon her deepest reservoir of emotional strength, Balot outmaneuvers Boiled in a catastrophic zero-gravity shoot-out inside an industrial hangar. Boiled is mortally wounded and chooses to accept his demise, recognizing Balot's superior resolve. Meanwhile, Shell's memory implants malfunction, revealing that Shell murdered all his past lovers to erase memories of his own childhood abuse. Balot watches calmly as Shell falls to his death, finally achieving complete legal vindication and emotional freedom.
A solid finale to the trilogy which fails to build the tension that it needs, making for a particularly disappointing climax for those familiar with the original novel.
