Synopsis
During the climactic final days of the One Year War, the treacherous Thunderbolt Sector is a lethal graveyard of demolished space colonies and violent electrical discharges. Free-jazz enthusiast and Earth Federation ace pilot Io Flemming commands the heavily armored Full Armor Gundam, seeking catharsis through brutal dogfights. Opposing him is Daryl Lorenz, a gifted Zeon sniper and amputee belonging to the Living Dead Division, who surrenders his remaining limbs to interface directly with the experimental Psycho Zaku. As dissonant jazz clashes against melancholic oldies pop, the two tormented pilots unleash devastating firepower in an unforgiving duel to the death.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Based on Yasuo Ohtagaki's acclaimed manga series, *Kidou Senshi Gundam Thunderbolt* was produced by Sunrise as a four-episode net animation series debuting in December 2015. Directed and written by Kou Matsuo, the production earned critical acclaim for its hyper-detailed mechanical animation, gritty psychological realism, and revolutionary use of avant-garde free-jazz compositions by Naruyoshi Kikuchi. The dark, adult-oriented depiction of the Universal Century battlefield cemented Thunderbolt as one of the most stylistically audacious mecha achievements of its generation.
