Following the victorious defense of Jaburo, White Base receives orders to execute a reconnaissance mission on the uninhabited Aleutian Island of Point Y, known locally as the Island of No Return, to flush out suspected Zeon remnants. Deploying in the RX-78-02 Gundam, Amuro Ray is ambushed by a customized, rock-throwing Zaku II and knocked unconscious. He awakens inside a makeshift lighthouse settlement populated by twenty war orphans sheltered by Cucuruz Doan, a former Zeon elite Southern Cross Corps ace who deserted after refusing to slaughter civilians, dedicating his life to farming and child welfare.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Doan's former unit, the elite Southern Cross Corps, lands on the island under orders to activate a buried intercontinental ballistic missile installation and wipe out Doan for his treason. Amuro recovers his Gundam and fights alongside Doan's weathered Zaku in an intense coastal skirmish, eliminating the ruthless Zeon strike team and disabling the missile warhead. Recognizing that the presence of Doan's mobile suit will inevitably attract future military assaults to the peaceful sanctuary, Amuro throws Doan's Zaku into the ocean depths, permanently freeing Doan from his warrior past to raise the children in peace.
