Story

Synopsis

Lupin III pursues the Bresson Diary, an artifact his grandfather failed to steal and which has remained unclaimed since. The chase brings him into conflict with a former Nazi organization pursuing the same object for reasons involving a device of considerable destructive potential, and into partnership with Laetitia, a young archaeologist with her own claim on the diary's contents. Jigen, Goemon, Fujiko, and Zenigata all appear, and the film is rendered entirely in 3DCG. Every set piece is staged to demonstrate what the franchise gains in three dimensions.

Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also made Stand By Me Doraemon and Godzilla Minus One, Lupin III: The First was the franchise's first fully 3DCG feature. Yamazaki's approach preserved Monkey Punch's character designs while translating them into three dimensions, a transition many long-running properties have handled poorly. The film earned solid reception in Japan and internationally, and it was released shortly after Monkey Punch's death, giving it additional weight for longtime followers of the franchise. Its release shortly after the original creator's death gave it additional significance for fans.
