Story

Synopsis

Arsene Lupin III targets a priceless historical relic: a personal dictionary once owned by Napoleon Bonaparte. The rare volume contains encoded clues revealing the location of the legendary treasure of the French empire, hidden by the Emperor himself. However, Lupin is not the only one after the book. A shadowy neo-fascist organization seeks the fortune to fund global military domination, while Inspector Zenigata forms an international task force to ambush the thief. Alongside Jigen, Goemon, and Fujiko, Lupin initiates high-speed European escapes and explosive vehicular battles to secure the imperial gold.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Airing on Nippon TV in August 1991 as the third annual Friday Roadshow installment, *Lupin III: Napoleon's Dictionary* was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha and directed by Osamu Dezaki. The production highlights Dezaki trademark aesthetic stylings, including intense watercolor postcard memories, dramatic diagonal shadows, and dynamic camera angles. With lively musical direction from Yuji Ohno and engaging comedic chemistry among the principal cast, the special provided Japanese viewers with a classic globe-trotting action heist full of historical intrigue.
