Story
Synopsis
Heart is a Tyrannosaurus raised by a Maiasaura family, which leaves him uncertain about what he actually is once he grows large enough for the difference to matter. Setting out alone, he finds an orphaned baby Ankylosaurus who mistakes him for a father and takes the phrase Heart uses on first sight, meaning you look delicious, as his own name. Intending to eat him and then failing to, Heart raises Umasou instead, fighting his own instincts across a childhood neither of them was supposed to have.

Directed by Masaya Fujimori and adapted from Tatsuya Miyanishi's children's picture book series, Heart and Yummie explores nature against nurture through a premise aimed at children but handled with genuine emotional seriousness. The film performed well domestically and was distributed internationally under several titles. Its central relationship, built on a predator suppressing his own biology to raise something he should eat, gives what could have been a simple children's film unexpected weight, and it remains fondly regarded by viewers who encountered it young. Its emotional seriousness makes it far more than a straightforward children's film.
