Story

Synopsis

In a fantasy realm where mystical spirits, goblins, and beastmen hold dominion, humanity has been hunted to the brink of total extinction, treated as vermin and delicacies. While patrolling his sacred woods, an emotionless, immortal woodland guardian known as a Golem discovers an orphaned human child named Somali chained in the brush. Recognizing that his biological lifespan has only one year remaining before he crumbles to dust, the Golem assumes the role of adoptive father. Disguising Somali's human traits beneath a hooded cloak, the pair travels across perilous alien cities searching for surviving human enclaves.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Satelight and HORNETS co-produced this twelve-episode fantasy adventure series, broadcast in winter 2020. Directed by Kenji Yasuda and written by Mariko Mochizuki, the anime adapts Yako Gureishi's web manga. The production stood out for its lush, imaginative fantasy art direction, rendered in rich pastel colors and alien botanical architecture. Supported by an emotional score featuring piano contributions from legendary artist Joe Hisaishi, the series won widespread critical praise for its tender paternal dynamic, gentle pacing, and heartbreakingly bittersweet exploration of family, mortality, and compassion amidst a hostile and prejudice-filled world.
