Synopsis

Based on the acclaimed children's novel by Hwang Sun-mi, this South Korean animated drama follows Leafie, an egg-laying battery hen who refuses to accept a miserable existence of perpetual confinement inside an industrial poultry cage. Faking her own death by playing sick, Leafie is discarded onto a compost pile and escapes into the wild forest. Soon after tasting freedom, Leafie discovers an abandoned mallard duck egg guarded by the protective otter Wanderer. When Wanderer is killed by a one-eyed weasel, Leafie hatches the egg, adopting the baby duckling and naming him Greenie.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Leafie raises Greenie as her own son despite their biological differences, enduring hostility from barnyard animals and constant attacks from the predatory one-eyed weasel. As Greenie matures into a magnificent mallard duck, he learns to fly and joins an autumn migratory flock to lead them south. Her maternal duty complete, an exhausted Leafie encounters the starving weasel, discovering that the predator only hunted to feed her own hungry kits. Voluntarily sacrificing her body to feed the weasel's babies, Leafie surrenders peacefully, her maternal spirit ascending to watch over Greenie from the sky.
