Synopsis
This theatrical compilation pairs Gainax's landmark mecha epics Gunbuster and Diebuster into one cohesive cinematic experience. The first half follows Noriko Takaya, an unproven space pilot whose training under Coach Ohta elevates her to the cockpit of the colossal battle machine Gunbuster against relentless insectoid Space Monsters. The second half leaps twelve millennia forward to Nono, an idealistic country girl aspiring to become a Space Pilot, who idolizes Buster Machine ace Lal'C. Across vastly different eras, both heroines confront the staggering sacrifices required by relativistic time dilation to protect human civilization from cosmic extinction.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
The compilation unites both narratives through their legendary relativistic conclusion. In Gunbuster, Noriko and Kazumi detonate the Black Hole Bomb to obliterate the Space Monsters, enduring twelve thousand years of Earth time while aging merely minutes inside the core. In Diebuster, Nono reveals her true identity as Buster Machine Number 7 and sacrifices herself to destroy the planetary threat. Twelve millennia later, Lal'C and the surviving human race illuminate the entire planet Earth with the illuminated welcome message Okaerinasai, greeting Noriko and Kazumi as their ship finally returns home across the cosmos.
