After being fatally stabbed while rescuing a commuter in a subway station, high school student Masaru Kato awakens inside an unfurnished Tokyo apartment room dominated by a black sphere known as Gantz. Informed that he and his fellow dead occupants are now conscripted into a lethal elimination game, Kato is teleported into the middle of a monster-infested Osaka. Alongside veteran combatants Reika and Yoshikazu Suzuki, Kato must survive against hundreds of grotesque mythological yokai aliens while trying to understand the rules and earn one hundred points to return to his younger brother.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
The battle escalates as Osaka's top players are dismembered by the shapeshifting demon lord Nurarihyon. Kato refuses to abandon helpless civilians, rescuing local mother Yamasaki and inspiring his teammates. Through multiple terrifying biological transformations, Kato and the survivors coordinate heavy laser fire and gravity guns to destroy Nurarihyon's final form. Earning one hundred points, Kato chooses to resurrect Yamasaki rather than buy his own freedom. Returning home, Kato is revealed to have won Gantz previously, having chosen to have his memories wiped so his brother could live peacefully.
