Synopsis

Far in the future, civilization has reached its final, network-based form. An infection in the distant past threw the city's automated systems out of order, and the multi-level city now copies itself endlessly in every direction. Humans have lost control of it and are hunted down by its defense system, the Safeguard. A woman named Cibo has lost her companions and every way out is blocked, until Killy the Wanderer arrives. Killy is searching for the Net Terminal Genes, the key to restoring order to the world.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Blame!: The Movie is a standalone story based on Tsutomu Nihei's manga Blame!, which began in Kodansha's Afternoon magazine in 1998. Polygon Pictures animated it. Hiroyuki Seshita, who directed Ajin and co-directed Knights of Sidonia at the studio, directed here, with Tadahiro Yoshihira as co-director and CG supervisor. Sadayuki Murai wrote the screenplay, Yuki Moriyama designed the characters, and Nihei served as creative consultant. Takahiro Sakurai voices Killy and Kana Hanazawa voices Cibo. The film opened in Japanese theaters in May 2017 and streamed worldwide on Netflix at the same time. Before it, the manga had been adapted as a series of ONA shorts in 2003.
