Story

Synopsis

Fourteen years after triggering the Near Third Impact to rescue Rei Ayanami, Shinji Ikari is recovered from Eva Unit-01's tesseract container by WILLE, an anti-NERV resistance organization led by Captain Misato Katsuragi aboard the flying battleship AAA Wunder. Coldly fitted with an explosive DSS Choker and informed that his past actions devastated planet Earth, a bewildered Shinji flees with Eva Mark.09 to NERV headquarters. There, an aloof Gendo Ikari orders Shinji to pilot Evangelion Unit-13 alongside Kaworu Nagisa, who offers Shinji emotional solace and musical camaraderie on a grand piano.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Kaworu takes Shinji to Central Dogma to retrieve the Spears of Longinus and Cassius, hoping to undo the worldwide devastation. However, Kaworu realizes too late that both artifacts are actually Spears of Longinus, warning Shinji against pulling them. Desperate to redeem himself, Shinji ignores Kaworu's pleas and extracts the spears, awakening the Twelfth Angel and initiating Fourth Impact. To halt global extinction, Kaworu sacrifices his life as the choker decapitates him before Shinji's eyes. Asuka forcibly drags a catatonic, grief-stricken Shinji across the desolate red wasteland of Tokyo-3.
