Synopsis

During a middle school summer nature camp on a coastal beach, fifteen innocent children explore a dark sea cave where they encounter an eccentric inventor named Kokopelli. He invites them to test a realistic video game where they pilot a colossal robot to defend Earth against fifteen alien monsters. Excited by the prospect of an adventure, all but one child sign a digital contract. However, upon their first victorious battle aboard the colossal mecha Zearth, they discover the horrifying truth: the robot runs directly on the pilot's life force, and every victory claims the chosen child pilot's life.

Background (may contain spoilers)

Produced by studio Gonzo and directed by Hiroyuki Morita, *Bokura no* adapts the psychological sci-fi mecha manga created by Mohiro Kitoh. Airing in spring 2007 for 24 episodes, the television series earned critical acclaim for its grim deconstruction of the super robot genre, exploring existential despair, trauma, and moral sacrifice. Director Morita made notable departures from the manga's bleak narrative to offer a more compassionate thematic resolution for the doomed children. Featuring the hauntingly beautiful opening theme Bokura no performed by Chiaki Ishikawa, the production remains a celebrated cult benchmark in psychological anime storytelling.
