Story
Synopsis
Set six months after the fall of Kongokaku, the armored steam locomotive Kotetsujyo arrives at the fortified mining region of Unato. Allied with local samurai regiments, the crew participates in a coordinated campaign to reclaim the strategic railway junctions and valleys from overwhelming swarms of Kabane undead. During the offensive, human-Kabane hybrid engineer Ikoma suspects that the local zombie hordes are behaving with alarming tactical coordination. However, as Ikoma begins experiencing violent auditory hallucinations and physiological degradation, allied military commanders suspect he is succumbing to infection, casting suspicion over his motives.

Ikoma deduces that a massive Black Smoke hive mind is being telepathically commanded by an infected girl entombed deep inside Unato Castle's subterranean core. When Mumei becomes trapped inside the fungal cavern, Ikoma injects a prototype neural booster, willingly risking total infection to shatter the fortress defenses. Reaching the epicenter alongside the Kotetsujyo's heavy steam artillery, Ikoma and Mumei sever the hive queen's spinal cords, causing the giant conglomerate monster to dissolve into ash. Cured of his fever, Ikoma and Mumei share a tender romantic kiss as Unato is liberated.
