Synopsis
Serving as the dark prequel featurette to the sci-fi mystery series, this film explores how cynical detective Shinjuurou Yuuki first met his bizarre, supernatural companion Inga. Set in a war-ravaged, politically censored Japan in the immediate aftermath of a catastrophic international conflict, Shinjuurou operates as an independent investigator seeking truth in a society smothered by state propaganda. While investigating an underground terrorist bombing and religious cult in a subterranean bunker, Shinjuurou encounters an enigmatic, androgynous entity that can compel people to answer a single question with absolute honesty.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Shinjuurou discovers that Inga is an immortal soul-eating deity who sustains existence by consuming the spiritual essence of dying humans. During an armed military raid on the cult compound, Shinjuurou's beloved female friend is fatally wounded. To save Shinjuurou's life and satisfy Inga's hunger, a desperate pact is struck: Inga promises never to murder anyone, agreeing instead to devour only the lingering souls of people who die naturally around Shinjuurou. In exchange, Inga helps Shinjuurou solve unsolvable crimes using his soul-compelling interrogation power, forming their lifelong investigative partnership.
